| Over time, Vincent’s Sunflowers have become a kind of icon. These cheerful flowers appear again and again in his work. His first still life with sunflowers against a yellow background, a study in shades of yellow, was executed in August 1888. This later version was painted at the request of his friend Paul Gauguin.
