ABUS源自德國，於1924年由創辦人August Bremicker所創立。

於1924年開始生產掛鎖，到了1958年在德國推出首個銅鎖頭。至於單車的鎖具，是於1959年開始生產。在1957年，ABUS是首家生產U型鎖的製造商。在1993年，成立了Mobile Security為獨立部門，專責開發及生產所有關於戶外及可移動的防盜產品，例如單車、機車、遊艇用的鎖具。

ABUS另外成立了Domestic Security Division，負責家用的鎖具，例如門鎖、窗鎖等；另外還有Commercial Security Division部門，專為企業、酒店等提供鎖具，亦有防盜系統及監控系統等。
